Candid cover and photographic spread
Candid is a lifestyle magazine for young women that celebrates real women and the things that are important to them. The design of the magazine mingles illustration, photography and typography to create something bright and playful. For this project I designed two covers, one that is illustrative and one that is photographic. The illustrative cover reflects the sense of acceptance and community that Candid is trying to cultivate. I wanted to design a magazine that is made for the normal woman, tackling questions and topics that women talk to their friends about.
Glam up and go green' centre spread
For a photographic spread I chose the topic of sustainable makeup and skin care. In my research I found an increased interest in zero waste alternatives in my target market group. Since there are certain criteria that women look for in sustainable cosmetics, I created a legend of characteristics to help readers determine if the products would work for them, for example if the cosmetic is vegan, cruelty free, ethically sourced etc. The layout is intentionally organic, in both layout and theme while highlighting the imagery of the cosmetics.
Candid alternative cover and illustrative spread
For an illustrative spread I decided to design an editorial piece on birth control. The article is split into two halves, the first two pages are from a journal of a young woman and her experience on birth control. The second half is an informational article of the symptoms of birth control and the benefits on the next page. Since the content of the article was personal, I wanted to create a mood with the illustrations. It was my intention to have the readers feel the writers emotions and relate to her story.
