Creating Unique Clothing that Empowers Asian Canadians
Go Bananas is a clothing line that empowers Asian Canadians who have or are going through acculturation and stereotyping to feel they are one of a kind. Using paint and dye, to create chaotic and unique one of one pieces. Each piece has a different message and character, to show the uniqueness of each individual. The fun and crazy visuals help catch the attention of viewers to let the voices of Asian Canadians be heard.
“Banana”, a Derogatory Term used Towards Asians
The brand is based on the term “Banana”, a derogatory term used towards a person of Asian descent who is acculturated to mainstream American Culture. Yellow on the outside and white on the inside. This is a term used to describe Asians who do not conform to the behaviors of typical East Asian Cultures. Growing up Japanese Canadian, I often had experiences where I felt different because of my ethnicity. Being called “Banana” because I acted a certain way made me feel as though I did not belong. Go Bananas was created based to express and share my experience growing up as an Asian Canadian and to support others in my community who may be going through the same experiences.
