Indigenous colonization in Canada has had devastating, intergenerational traumatic effects.
This project was a campaign to raise awareness of issues related to Indigenous colonization in Canada. The goal was to do this through drawing attention to an established Indigenous activist; Autumn Peltier, the Anishnaabek Chief Water Comissioner. Through this, I wanted to help change the audience’s behaviour to see supporting Indigenous communities as more urgent and important. I realized that I had very little understanding of the Indigenous experience, so I felt the most effective way to shine light on issues related to this community was to raise awareness of an existing Indigenous activist.
The overall creative direction of the campaign was to embody Autumn Peltier.
The colour pallette used is the official colours of Peltier’s home tribe, Wiikwemkoong First Nations Tribe. Also, the text in the posters is from a speech that Peltier planned to give to Justin Trudeau in 2017 - though was stood up by the PM. Posters are used for the campaign because they can be placed in public spaces and are able to affect a more diverse audience this way. Depending on the where the posters will be placed - such as on the street or in a subway station - they could be placed as sets of 2 or a set of 3.
