Welcome to The Tale of Two Paths! Travel the Path of Life from the Beginning of High School all the Way up to Graduation!
The Tale of Two Paths is a classic board game that teaches the complexities of life and makes players aware of the educational divide and achievement gap based on neighbourhoods and their environment. Neighbourhoods can be a huge determinant of how you grow up. Growing up in a wealthy vs impoverished neighbourhood is a significant factor. The purpose of the game is to educate children and make them aware of minorities who struggle in low-income neighbourhoods and their struggles by creating an engaging experience for players to understand and learn about the neighbourhood divide and all the variables that go into it.
How to Play
Travel the path of life through high school, make decisions, earn money from a part-time job, attend school, do extracurriculars, play sports, study, buy a car etc. The player with the highest value at the end of the game and can afford to attend college wins. All players spin the wheel to find out what neighbourhood they grow up in and, therefore, their path of life. Players who spin an even number start on Bridle Path, the wealthy neighbourhood and players who spin an odd number start on Thorncliffe Park, the impoverished neighbourhood. The board game also doubles as an interactive infographic about the educational divide and systemic racism based on your neighbourhood. Whenever you land on or pass over space with an arrow at the bottom of it, you have the option to flip it up to learn more about the injustices minorities face in growing up in Toronto. The Tale of Two Paths serves as a more engaging experience for the reader/player to understand and learn.
The Goal
At the end of the game, the goal is hoping the players feel more aware of the injustices minorities face in our society. Less fortunate children than others are often made fun of in school because they cannot afford necessities than other kids typically can. The game was created to help children become more empathetic towards each other. This means reflecting on how your social status might have given you an advantage even if you didn't ask for it or earn it, while the impoverished side's social status might have given them a disadvantage. Checking your privilege isn't about conceding that you've had an easy life. It's about acknowledging that there are inevitable struggles that you will never encounter that are very specific to certain groups of people. Recognizing the differences is an essential first step in working towards equality.
