Reimagining Video Games Through AR
Ever wondered what it'd be like seeing your favourite video game characters brought to life in a real-world location? How about roaming an open field and discovering a treasure chest containing a new item? People who play video games may find themselves imagining these game elements in the real world, but have no means of bringing them into fruition. This led to the design challenge: what can help facilitate these imaginations in the real world, in a fun and interactive way? PlayAR is a community-driven app which allows users to bring their video game imaginations to life by creating their own augmented reality (AR), and situating it in real-world locations for others to discover and interact with.
Gamify Your Life
Explore the world around you to discover custom AR inspired by existing video games. While the AR can technically be used in any location, each one is created based on real-world locations with specific perspectives. This allows for a more immersive experience that can only be achieved by seeking the exact location of the AR, giving users an incentive to explore the world.
Accommodating to Different Playstyles
Use the map to see pinpoints of AR near you based on your current location. With this function, you can adjust to your desired playstyle by tapping the filter icon and changing the maximum radius your current location detects nearby AR. You can even set the radius to 0 meters, where a pinpoint won’t appear until you approach the exact spot of the AR. This mimics the experience of playing video games and the different playstyles people may have. Some prefer to use walkthroughs to know where everything is while playing a video game, while others prefer not knowing where anything is, and making new discoveries entirely on their own accord.
Create and Upload Your Own AR
A fictional desktop app, PlayAR Developer, allows users to create their AR externally before syncing it to the app. Each file contains a unique QR code that can be scanned with your phone camera to begin the upload process. If you are in the exact spot at which your AR will function, you can set up your AR by allowing the app to detect your current location (which can be adjusted for more accuracy) and use your camera to ensure that you get the desired perspective and location you want. Alternatively, you can set your AR remotely. However, this method depends entirely on Google Street View, thus having more restrictions, such as not being able to get the exact location or perspective you want.
