Cultural Identity and Ambiguity
What constructs one’s cultural identity? Does it depend on where someone was born, or where they’ve grown up? Their genetic makeup? While there are many people who can easily pinpoint what their cultural identity is, others (i.e. second-generation immigrants, adoptees, those of mixed-race, etc.) find this more difficult to navigate. This confusion could result in other inner conflicts, such as feeling disconnected from their heritage and not knowing how to connect with it better, or feeling like no one relates to their situation at all. What can help address these feelings of conflict and cultural ambiguity, and help people feel less alone?
Embracing the Intersection of Different Cultures
Convergence Journal features excerpts from those of various ethnic origins, but who feel as if they are culturally separate (like second-generation immigrants). Each issue focuses on a specific country; the first being Korea.
A Glimpse Into the Country of Focus
As readers gain insight on the featured perspectives and experiences, it simultaneously shows the country's everyday environments and life through film photography. This allows readers to learn more about the country of focus, especially for those who want to find ways to connect with the country better. The reason for using film photography is due to its ability to portray everyday environments in an authentic manner.
Visual Direction
This magazine follows a contemporary style by using a generous amount of white space, a fluid layout of content, a mixture of sans-serif and display serif typefaces, and incorporates a lot of film photography. By maximizing the breathing room for the content, the magazine feels less commercial and more sincere with its content.
