Project Summary
My Discovery is a collection of educational card games to facilitate children and preteens age 8 to 13 years old an inclusive and positive outlook of sex education. Ultimately, providing an opportunity to design a strategy for shifting the cultural and societal taboos, encouraging more open and honest conversations, and gaining better knowledge, skills and attitude around various aspects of sexual health and its impact on daily life in an approachable and engaging manner.
Design Problem
In today’s sex education curriculum across Canada characterized as inconsistent, outdated, and ineffectively implemented. The curriculum does not offer or emphasize different aspects of sexual health, nor does it cater to diverse communities. It exclusively focuses on preventing negative outcomes, including STIs, sexual violence, and unintended pregnancies. Despite the importance of those topics, students are more interested in learning to make better decisions in critical situations, fostering healthy relationships, sexual pleasure and activities, and LGBTQSI+ content. Ultimately, there is no balance between the risks and the positives in the curriculum. Aside from the curriculum itself, educators play a significant role in students' learning outcomes. Educators often portrayed the curriculum as intimidating, lacking in practical application, and disconnected from students. This has led children and teens to seek information through media outlets as it is the most accessible way. However, it often offers unreliable and biased information or even discovers inappropriate content, thus contributing to misconceptions about sexual health and alarming results.
Design Solution
I developed a collection of educational card games as discussing sexual health can be a heavy and sensitive topic. This delivers an opportunity to break the ice, foster meaningful conversations and build an inclusive space while simultaneously discovering yourself through play. I believe the concept of play enables the shift of fear and awkwardness into curiosity and empowerment with a touch of humour to create a more enjoyable and positive learning experience.
