a look at Filipino Beauty Standards
"Maganda" is a book that gives a glance at Filipino beauty standards from two sides: from the historical context that shapes them and from the personal narratives of 5 Filipino-Canadian women navigating identity and their search for self-confidence.
An Overview of Maganda
Maganda is comprised of 2 different types of pages: historical articles and personal narratives, in order to give context to Filipino beauty standards as well as a personal reflection about the subject, coming from the perspectives of 5 different Filipino-Canadian women. A subtle gradient is used to reflect a recurring theme of colorism in Filipino Beauty standards and navigating that insecurity throughout the 3 chapters of the book; childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Historical Articles
Historical articles about native Filipinos, early colonialism in the Philippines, and media messaging gives the reader a background on where Filipino beauty standards originate and have grown/transformed throughout time. These were designed with a modular layout and half toned photo treatment to separate this as informational content, and very different to the upcoming pages of personal narratives.
Personal Narratives
The personal narratives of 5 Filipino-Canadian women, and their differing perspectives in navigating identity and beauty standards are told through a series of photos from different points of their lives and their own journal entries. They each tell a story from a time in childhood, adolescence and adulthood to produce 5 unique overarching stories that all revolve around finding identity and navigating Filipino and North American beauty standards while being first generation Filipino Canadians. The treatment of photos are quite warm to reflect a personal almost aged feel, while the type was also changed to a more humanistic serif typeface. These design decisions aim to give these spreads a personal journal like feel.
