About the project
This project aimed to explore mapping the physical/non-physical forms of information and events from a book's literary narrative, then create an information visualization that portrays the narrative directly. This visualization is about the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It is a memoir of Jeannette's life growing up and her upbringing in a poverty-stricken and dysfunctional family.
First visual
The author's father told her, "If you don't want to sink, you better learn how to swim". It was this quote that inspired the theme of the visualizations. The first visual is a horizontal timeline of events from Jeannette's life. Each event has been plotted on a graph that represents the highs and lows of her life. The illustration of the woman shows her sinking, swimming, and floating on the surface, which further emphasizes the struggles she went through.
Second Visual
The second visualization provides a different horizontal timeline of the characters that appear throughout the book and how much of an impact they had on Jeanette's life based on the size of the circle. Both visuals can be compared to one another to reveal which events in her life had a more significant effect and whether it was a positive or negative experience.
