Data Visualization
Ring Ring is a two-part data visualization design that uses Processing and After Effects to visualize data of calls received in a year. The model indicates the frequency of types of calls received (Incoming, Outgoing, My Buddy Incoming and My Buddy Outgoing), the call rate (Night or Weekend Night Call Rate and Weekday Call Rate), and the duration of each call.
How It Works
Ring Ring categorizes each call into one circle or ring. Within the ring, Processing is used to analyze the type of call, which in turn determines the placement of the inner rings. My Buddy Outgoing calls are placed at the bottom of the ring, whereas My Buddy Incoming calls are placed at the top of the ring. Outgoing calls are to the left of the circle and Incoming calls are to the right. The amount of inner rings is determined by the duration of the call; one ring per a minute. Lastly, each call is categorized as a Night/Weekend Night call or a Weekday call, which changes the opacity to either 50% or 100%.
Abstract and Dynamic Display of Data
The data forms a unique and abstract pattern based on the calls each month, which are displayed as a series of collectable posters. The data is broken down and contextualized by a motion graphic report, which includes a legend that explains what the symbols used represent concerning the information and a summary animation, which breaks down from the data, like overall call time, number of calls in the year, etc. As a motion design piece, Ring Ring becomes more informative and engaging by directly addressing the data in a more dynamic medium. In addition to contextualizing the data, sound effects are added to improve the engagement of the audience. Different sounds are used to bring the attention of the viewers to new information.
