DECO SWEET is a DIY (do it yourself) crafting kit that instructs users on how to sew desserts out of felt. This is a well known hobby in the small online crafting community. My goal for this package design project is to encourage more users to partake in this activity by designing a welcoming package that clearly illustrates the product and attract new buyers through its playful tones, all while employing eco-friendly practices and materials with optimal accessibility.
The overall tone and voice of the design was to illustrate the playfulness and ‘homemade’ feeling of making your own craft. The felt sweets mirror the ideology of baking your own sweets. Thus, the catch phrase of my product is: “desserts handmade with love”. To embrace the handcrafted, do-it-yourself theme, the logo is digitally handwritten and the illustrations are digitally hand drawn on a drawing program. This allows the visuals to have an organic taste to it.
A common problem the packaging industry faces are its environmental impact it leaves. DECO SWEET strives to execute sustainable and eco-friendly packaging. While minimizing the use of plastics, I combine different purposes of the packaging to ensure less material is used. The outer packaging has a second life, which can be used to store or display the finished craft project. The instruction manuals are printed on the packaging to reduce the amount of materials and printing. I hope to encourage users to pursue the art of craft, and perhaps gather reused materials make your own creations.
