Madeline Kinney
Madeline Kinney is a photographer based in Tokyo, Japan who has a way of capturing solitude in very public spaces. Her work explores the feeling of peering into other people’s moments and lives which allows you to not only feel the solitude of the subject but also the artist.
To convey this feeling, I used mylar paper so that the photographs had ghostly backgrounds of a different moment in time. I decided to get experimental with the form and was inspired by distance, and how we are able to view art anywhere via modes of reproduction.
I set the book up so that the reader could really interact with the work and enjoy the book exhibition style. I stitched each booklet with red silk thread to match the red the artist is drawn to throughout her collection.
I used Japanese paper for the small information insert, and the cover. To finish it off, I wrapped the book in an envelope which portrayed both distance and personalization.
